My three inspirational pieces are the following:

I choose this picture because it was a woman who represents what it meant to be a leader. She was an African American individual who compelled on women’s right. She was a powerful example of womanhood.

Title: Self-Portrait with Monkey
Artist: Frida Kahlo

I chose this portrait because this individual represented herself in the company of various pet. It highlighted who she was as a person. It stated that she used the pets as surrogates for the children she could not have due to severe injuries. Also her hairstyle represents her heritage. I choose this piece particular because she has bee a role model for women in the Mexican-American and feminist communities.

Title: Michelle Obama
Artist: Kurt Kauper

I chose this picture because it is the first lady of the United States. She has accomplished many services such as advocating for poverty awareness. I chose this because she is a fashion icon and role model for women. She dresses in a sophisticated manner and many people look up to her.

The next three pictures below were chosen because I believe they help illustrate whom I am and what I stand for. I feel that they represent me as a person, so I used them for  my self-portrait.

The next two pictures are drafts of my self-portrait.

My Final Draft of my self-portrait

I used pencil to create my self-portrait because I felt that using any other media would had not given the same message I wanted to convey to others. The challenge that I faced while creating my self-portrait was I did not know what to draw. I had different personalities and values that I felt were significant. I overcame the challenge by drawing four different values that I always try to follow. This piece is a representation of me because one thing that my father always drilled in me was RESPECT. He told me that it was important to respect myself, to know whom I was, where I came from and where I wanted to go in life. The portrait that I am wearing a white dress and red dress represent my personality. I always like to carry myself with dignity and with strong values. I feel that in today’s time women have forgot what it meant to respect them selves. For example, they would wear clothes that show too much skin. I feel like that a woman should take care of herself, but she can dress up without showing too much skin. The picture in the center represents who I am. I am an African child that was born in the United States. My attire is a combination of both African and Western. The fabric of my blazer came from Africa, and the black dress was bought in a retail store in Buffalo. The attire with my blazer, pants and handbag shows that I am a sophisticated individual. It demonstrates “where I want to go in life.” I want to become a social worker and change the lives of individuals. I want to be a leader and help the lives of many women in my parents’ home country. Women are not advocated as much when it comes subject such as abuse, education, poverty and justice. I want to become like Sojourner Truth, Frida Kahlo, and Michelle Obama. I want to be an activist, leader and most importantly a powerful woman that contributes to her community. To help achieve my theme in my project I used elements and principle of art such as, color, line, harmony and unity. The project was interesting and enjoyable because I was able to express whom I am through a form of art. I think my final project was creative because I was able to take individuals who have inspired me and connect them to my own values.
